Record television programs while watching another channel on my digital NTL box?

I recently upgraded my NTL box from anolog to digital then it can not record TV programs while watching another TV channel. You can only record what I see. I used to be able to see or record channels 1-5, or in my video and TV and I saw a different channel in my anolog NTL box. Does anyone have a solution that will let me view channels recored or 1.5, and I can see other digital channels on my machine. It is why my brother can tune channels on the TV and video 5.1, to enable recording, without the need for a separate box or a separate antanna.

You can not do at this time, but there are changes in the pipeline, so its ntl: box will be high definition, two tuners, and many more!

digital and anolog TV and Boxes?

I was wandering about digital and anolog things i heard that soon anolog will not be available so we can not watch tv if its anolog. I also want to know about digital set top box…wat i want to know is when will anolog tv will not be available (if its true)? and if i get a digital set top box and i can connect it to my laptop can i watch digital tv on it?

Thank you…

(This answer assumes you are in the US)

What is happening is the US is changing from an analog TV broadcast system to a digital one.

This does not mean that you need a new TV. Digital TV signals can be converted to analog ones to make them compatible with older TVs.

If you get your TV signals over the air (OTA), you would need to get a converter box for your old TV. Starting in Jan 2008 the government will have a coupon program that will let each household buy a couple of them for about $20 each. Most analog OTA signals will be shut off after 2/17/09.

If you get your TV signals by satellite, these already use digital signals. The receivers contain a converter.

Cable companies are required to maintain analog service until at least 2012.

>if i get a digital set top box and i can connect it to my laptop can i watch digital tv on it

Well, yes and no. If you get TV signals OTA or from a cable system that uses something called “unencrypted QAM”, you can buy a digital USB tuner that will let you use your laptop as a TV.

Other than that, there are USB attachments that will let you see analog signals from a converter on your laptop, but watching non OTA/QAM digital signals directly will probably not be possible. This is not a technical limitation. It’s because of copy protection/DRM/HDCP.

Cheat Sheet
————————————–…
Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = “Analog TV”

New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = “Digital TV” = DTV

Digital signals used on some cable systems = QAM

OTA = “Over the Air” = stuff you get through your TV antenna

“CECB” = government speak for TV converter boxes that qualify for their coupon program. Stands for “Coupon-Eligible Converter Box”

Hotel Restaurants: Where Good Food Is Just The Beginning

There’s no denying that the perfect complement to a great hotel is a great restaurant – one in which mouth-watering food delights the palate, stunning city or ocean views please the eyes, and a pleasant atmosphere makes you feel right at home from the moment you set foot inside. Whether traveling for business or leisure, some travelers opt to venture beyond the property come breakfast, lunch or dinner time. But why leave the premises when good food and service are mere footsteps away? Below you’ll find a sampling of hot dining spots in select properties, chosen not only for their delectable fare but also for the comfortable ambiance, impressive decor and unobstructed views that have earned them high marks among travel mavens and restaurant critics alike.

New York – Top of the Tower Restaurant: Prepare to be swept away by a majestic New York skyline while at this rooftop restaurant inside the historic Beekman Tower Hotel – a perfect choice for fans of Art Deco architecture. Located on the 26th floor, the hotel’s menu features small plates such as Seared Sea Scallops and Crispy Calamari as well as big dishes including Oven Roasted Chicken paired with mashed potatoes. Open for breakfast and dinner daily, the restaurant’s inviting ambiance makes it a popular meeting spot among vacationing couples and business travelers alike. What’s more, excellent service provided by the restaurant staff tops off what many call the perfect New York City dining experience.

Orlando – The Plantation Room: What could top a AAA-Four Diamond hotel chock full of great amenities including a lakeside outdoor pool, Grand Bohemian Gallery and evening entertainment? One that has a AAA-Four Diamond restaurant, of course, like the boutique Celebration Hotel nestled in the heart of Celebration. Featuring hand-cut Stock Yars Angus Beef steaks and premium cuts of pork, all cooked under the watchful and expert eye of Executive Chef Zach Martin, The Plantation Room is nothing short of a meat lover’s paradise. Delectable steakhouse salads and Florida seafood entrees round out the contemporary menu, and guests can also take advantage of the restaurant’s eclectic wine list.

Las Vegas – Top of the World Restaurant: Ever thought about elevating your taste buds while you yourself are elevated 800 feet above the ground? That might seem a bit far-fetched, but not if you happen to stop by Stratosphere Casino, Hotel and Towers’ Top of the World Restaurant. Awarded “Best Gourmet Room” by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the restaurant revolves 360º every 80 minutes, ensuring you take in picturesque views of Vegas, the Strip and the surrounding valley. From savory steaks and mouth-watering seafood to a wide assortment of delicious desserts including Banana Bread Pudding, this restaurant is a can’t-miss stop on the Strip. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for lunch.

Boston – Meritage: The 5-star Boston Harbor Hotel’s location overlooking historic Boston Harbor at Rowes Wharf makes it a great place to relish expansive water views. But at Meritage The Restaurant, that’s not all travelers enjoy – let alone those with discriminating palates. Chef Daniel Bruce has perfected the art of seamlessly pairing the flavors infused in his cuisine with those found in hundreds of fine wines. Try delicious Caviar Topped Island Creek Oysters, or indulge in Pan Seared Diver Sea Scallops. Meritage was given the “Best in Service” distinction by Boston Globe Magazine (2007), named “Boston’s Best Romantic Restaurant” by The Improper Bostonian (2006), and rated #1 for Best Waterfront Dining by Citysearch (2005). Accolades racked up by this fine hotel go on and on.

Los Angeles – WEST Restaurant & Lounge: Housed inside Los Angeles’ Hotel Angeleno, set at the crossroads of Brentwood and Bel-Air, WEST offers a great spot to mingle with friends or convene with co-workers following a day spent shopping or in meetings. Open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, and for dinner Monday through Sunday, the restaurant features a diverse range of lively music, from contemporary jazz to funk. The dining room has sophisticated lighting and comes furnished with lavish banquettes and marble tables.  Pair your entree – prime dry age steaks and traditional pastas are guest favorites here – with a glass of Italian or California wine while soaking up panoramic views of Los Angeles through floor-to-ceiling windows. Should you need it, WEST features more than 2,800 square feet of private reception and meeting space.

Whether you’re looking to start your day off right with a buffet breakfast, fuel up at lunch time, or wine and dine with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day while staring into a perfect sunset, hotels are home to some of the finest restaurants out there. So next time you’re craving a good meal, don’t be so quick to look beyond the walls of your hotel; a gastronomic gem could be just a few floors down – or up!

Tips on Choosing the Best Ring to Fit Her Style

Now that you have found the women that you want to spend the rest of your life with; you are ready to find the perfect ring. There are many different style setting and styles of rings to choose from. If you don’t have any idea what type of ring she wants you will have to carefully try to get some clues or hints from her. You can ask friends or family members to help you find out the answer to your questions. Just make sure that it is someone who can keep a secret.

You can also pay attention to the jewelry she likes and dislikes to help you decide what will be the perfect engagement ring for her. You should pay attention and notice what type of jewelry she wears now and also what metal color she prefers. Most women have a definite preference some prefer gold and some prefer platinum or white. Also take a look at style of jewelry she wears now. Is her style more contemporary looking with bold styles or does she wear vintage looking jewelry. Maybe she wears classic pieces that seem to never go out of style.

If you pay attention and notice the things she wears all the time, you’ll get an idea of what her jewelry preference is. Pay close attention to the pieces that she wears all the time, not the ones she only wears occasionally. Because the ones that she wears all the time will tell you a lot more about her style and preference in jewelry.

Try to remember if she’s ever mentioned any favorite jewelry styles or pointed out some pieces when you were shopping together. If not, you can always take her shopping at the mall and steer her towards the jewelry stores. If you want to be subtle, say you’re looking for a new watch or something to that effect. Then make sure to pause at the engagement ring counter.

Next thing you want to consider is what will look best on her hands. An elongated diamond such as an oval or marquise can make short fingers look longer. Wideband rings usually make fingers appear shorter than they are, so they are best suited for long fingers. Women with long fingers can wear bold ring styles. An engagement ring that is extremely delicate could get lost on a large hand, making the ring appear even smaller. These are just some things to keep in mind when deciding on the right engagement ring.

You also have to choose the right shape and setting. Round diamonds are the number one choice chosen by the most brides. There are other shapes available, including; oval or pear-shaped, square and fanciers shape such as hearts You’ll want to consider whether she would prefer a solitary diamond set alone in a band or would she prefer something with stones on the band. Her current jewelry may give you some clues about her preferences.

You also want to find out her ring size. You could take a piece of her current jewelry and use it to get the correct ring size. You can also ask a friend or family member to try to find the size for you. These are just some of the things that you can use to help find the perfect diamond engagement ring for your loved one.

Analog Digital

Analog Digital
analog, digital?

could anyone explain to me, in simple terms, what in $*%^ these terms mean? and what is the deal with everything boiling down to numbers (ala “The Matrix”)? i am not dumb, but i sure as heck don’t have a mind for math and i have never heard an explanation for these things that i could comprehend. no sarcastic (i.e. “because you’re blonde”) answers, please
Okay – I guess I didn’t even ASK the question very clearly. Babloo hits on what I don’t understand. I have had the 1 and 0 thing (attempted to be) explained to me. I just CANnot understand how 2 numbers are translated into all that information.

Analog generally refers to mechanisms that are continuous. Old watches and clocks for example are analog because their internal parts and hands are continuously moving.

Digital generally refers to mechanisms that are discrete. What is referred to as digital clocks or watches change once a second.

Also, the term digital can refer to they way information is packaged. Within a computer, information is packaged digitally – i.e specific, unique, numbers are assigned to represent different pieces of information.

[edit - in response to "additional information"]

Analog signals are converted to digital using a sampling technique. A device takes a measurement of an analog signal a certain number of times a second – say 65000. Each time the signal is sampled, a number is generated and can then be stored digitally.
